About Department of Psychology


Since its conception in 1959, at the Chandigarh campus, the faculty of the department has contributed immensely to the field of psychology. The department of psychology has a multidimensional image in terms of excellent research and teaching and has been a leader in the region. The faculty has attained international recognition and the alumni have excelled as professionals in different parts of the world. The balance between pure and applied research has given the department a rare profile. Major areas of research are clinical psychology, mental training, organizational psychology, media psychology, cognitive psychology, counseling, sports psychology, positive psychology and health psychology.

The faculty has published extensively in the form of books, articles, reviews, perspectives and research papers in reputed journals. Some of the faculty members have been on the editorial boards of the reputed international journals and have been actively involved in guiding research students on varied topics. The department offers teaching and research programs for M.A., Post M.A. Diploma in Professional counseling and psychotherapy; and PhD. At the masters level a wide spectrum of courses spread over a period of four semesters are offered in order to equip the students to pursue specialization in areas of their interest. Course curriculum has both academic as well as societal relevance and incorporates contemporary debates. Some of the courses are compulsory courses aimed at providing strong theoretical and methodological base while others are optional courses.

Recently during the years 2012-14, the department upgraded itself by initiating some major changes viz. shifting to a new bigger library (on ground floor), establishing a seminar room and a counseling center for the PU students. The department emphasizes on providing comfortable environment, good infrastructure to the students and faculty members. Research scholars have a separate room to study and do their research. Besides, the department has well equipped psychology lab.
